Open DNS Resolvers, DoS attacks and more

An open DNS server is a DNS that accepts DNS queries from IP addresses on the Internet. These servers are therefore vulnerable to Denial of Service attacks.

Domain Name System, also known as DNS, is an integral part of Internet infrastructure. This system allows DNS names to be resolved correctly. The system consists of DNS recursive resolvers and authoritative DNS nameservers, which handle DNS requests from clients such as web browsers.

Typically, a client sends a DNS query to its stub resolver, which then passes the query to a recursive resolver. The recursive DNS query is sent to an authoritative DNS server for the root zones by the recursive DNS query. The query result is returned to the client.

There are a number of different ways to attack an open DNS resolver, but one of the most common is by sending fake DNS queries to the resolver with the victim's IP address as the source address. As long as the attacker keeps sending fake DNS requests, the open DNS resolver will fetch the cached DNS records and send them to the victim's address.

To avoid these attacks, configure the DNS server to accept only queries from certain IP addresses. This is usually the RFC 1918 IPv4 address area or the IPv6 global address block of an organization.

This can be done by installing a DNS firewall to restrict access. You can do this on the external side of a DNS server that is able to bridge an internal and a external network, or you can limit recursive DNS on the network internal only to hosts that are part of that subnet.

Open DNS Resolvers are a special type of recursive DNS resolvers. They accept recursive DNS Queries and resolve them just like traditional recursive DNS Resolvers. Open DNS resolvers differ from ISP default DNS servers in that they provide services faster and more robust than ISP DNS.

For example, Google's Public DNS is a highly popular open DNS resolver in many locations and is used as a primary resolver by more than 1 in 5 users. The company's reputation as a DNS provider and the reliability of its service are likely to have contributed to this popularity.

Cloudflare Public DNS Resolver also has many features which are useful for detecting malicious DNS activity. It is possible to log DNS traffic, including the query type, resolved DNS records, resolver locations, and other metadata, for non-profit operations research.

In the experiment, a little over 1 in 6 users use an open DNS resolver as their primary resolver and this increases to over 1 in 3 when the list is widened to include all full resovlers. These servers are widely used and indicate that many network service providers use them either as their primary resolvers, or as backups to authoritative DNS server.
